FAQ
How does it work?
When you choose the VH5000HL, you have your own power station and can generate and use electricity independently of the power grid. The VH5000HL is an all-in-one solar energy generator with built-in batteries. It operates with or without a connection to the electricity grid and has a 1-phase output of 230 volts at 50 Hz. It functions similarly to a gasoline or diesel generator but without using fuel, creating noise, or emitting odors. It is 100% green and is only used when power is needed. The built-in battery charger stores solar energy in Lithium LiFePo4 48-volt batteries. The electricity in the batteries is converted by an inverter from 48 DC to 230 volts AC, similar to regular power outlets.

How much energy can I store?
In the VH5000HL, you can store 10 kW/hour of solar energy, and with the additional VH5000 battery, you can store 20 kW/hour. You can use 80% of this stored energy. It is possible to connect multiple batteries. The batteries can be charged and discharged 6000 times, which is sufficient for over 15 years of daily use.

How much power does the system deliver?
The VH5000HL can deliver a maximum of 5000 watts/hour, equivalent to approximately 21 amperes at 230 volts. You can connect devices up to a total of 5000 watts, such as lighting, refrigerators/freezers, coffee machines, air fryers, washing machines, etc.

How many solar panels can I connect?
The VH5000HL can be connected to a maximum of 5000 watts of solar panels. For example, 5000 watts / 410Wp solar panels = 12 solar panels. The system can connect a maximum of 500 volts DC of solar panels in a series string.

What is a Combiner Box?
The cables from the solar panels are connected to a combiner box. It serves two purposes: first, it can connect 4 series strings of solar panels, regulating the current supplied by the solar panels to the VH5000HL input. Second, the combiner box acts as a lightning conductor.

Can I connect everything to it?
In principle, you can connect all devices that operate at 230 volts, as long as the total power does not exceed 5000 watts. The system is not suitable for 3-phase devices like a heat pump or induction cooker.

Feed-in / Net metering?
The VH5000HL is a stand-alone power generator and cannot feed the generated power back into the electricity grid. Net metering will soon not be possible.

How fast is the battery charged?
The charging speed of the batteries depends on the solar energy available on a given day. Generally, the system will charge the batteries within 2-4 hours in full sunlight. On cloudy days, it may take longer.

What if there is not enough sun?
In cloudy conditions, the system may not generate sufficient solar energy to fully charge the batteries for the night. You can switch to the power grid or a generator to charge the batteries in case they are running low. The system can be configured to choose whether or not to charge from the electricity network.

How long does it take for a battery to discharge (hours)?
The system can deliver 5000 watts per hour. A typical household uses approximately 250-350 watts per hour at night. With a full battery capacity of 80% of 10 kWh, the batteries will last for 20 hours. This means that with a full battery, you have power throughout the night, and the cycle begins again when the sun rises in the morning.

How do I connect it?
The VH5000HL has only 3 cables: the DC cable from the solar panels, the output cable (1-phase, 230 volts, 50 Hz), and an input cable for charging from external sources.

I have 3 phases, what now?
Most homes and businesses in the Netherlands have a 3-phase connection (3 x 25 AMP). Currently, there are no battery systems that can deliver 3-phase power, or they are very large and expensive. In your home, you usually use 3 phases only for heat pumps and induction cookers; the rest operates on 230 volts. You can use one VH5000HL to feed into one phase. Alternatively, you can choose to install 2 or 3 VH5000HL systems, one for each incoming phase, but these currents cannot be combined into 3-phase 380-400V.

Fire hazard? Can it be installed indoors?
Lithium batteries have a bad reputation for flammability, as seen in electric vehicles and bicycles. These batteries can explode and should be charged and stored outdoors. The VH5000HL and the additional battery pack are made of Lithium LiFePo4 material, which is non-flammable and cannot explode under normal use. The system should be installed in a well-ventilated indoor space, in a dry, dust-free environment. The system is only 22 cm thick and 50 cm wide but requires a minimum of 30 cm of space at the front, side, and top. The system weighs 90 kg, and the additional battery weighs 60 kg. The system should be securely mounted to a sturdy wall with proper bolts.

What is the system suitable for?
The system is essentially an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) or emergency power provision. It has versatile applications, typically used to supply electricity to households, off-grid living such as Tinyhouses, and can also be used in businesses requiring constant energy, such as computers in data centers or process engineering. During a power outage from your electricity network (blackout), the batteries provide power, and the solar panels feed the batteries so that you still have electricity. In an ON-GRID system that returns solar energy to the network (as in most homes), solar panels do not work during a power outage, and your expensive solar panels are of no use. Hybrid inverters also exist, which have a battery connection, but when the connected battery is depleted, it usually causes problems since the ON-GRID inverter needs 230 volts to charge the batteries.

Can I feed the stored energy back into the electricity grid?
No, the VH5000HL is a stand-alone power generator and stores the generated energy in batteries. For example, in the summer, the system may generate more energy than it can store, and you can use this excess energy to run an air conditioner.

How much electricity do I save?
An average household in the Netherlands uses 10-20 kW per day. With current energy prices, 20 kW costs 75 cents per kW, totaling 15 euros per day, or over 5000 euros per year. Energy prices may decrease to 1-2 euros per kW in the future. With our VH5000 system, you can potentially recoup your investment within 1 or 2 years. This is a good investment, and you are never without electricity, providing peace of mind.

How much warranty?
We provide a 3-year warranty on the system's batteries, which can last up to 15 years with normal use.

Does it have Wifi and an App?
Yes, the VH5000 has Wifi and a COM connection, and comes with a Wifi dongle and App, allowing you to remotely monitor your device, including usage, solar energy production, and capacity.

Installation
The connection should be done by an experienced electrician. You can use your existing solar panel installation, but your current inverter will be replaced by the VH5000HL. Alternatively, you can choose to use your current inverter to charge the batteries' 230-volt input from the VH5000HL when the solar panels are producing energy, but this is less efficient.

Concept
The VH5000HL is a globally unique system, representing the concept of off-grid living, and has won the CEMEX2017 award for the Most Sustainable Installation and Construction in Puerto Rico, USA. The system utilizes free energy sources such as sun, rainwater, and wind.
